Jay Tillotson asked:

Dial-up internet is slowly but surely being phased out with more and more households turning to a broadband connection instead. But with so many providers around, each offering a different package, finding the right one for you may seem like an uphill struggle.

There are some things to consider when shopping around for a broadband provider if you want to get the best deal. First of all, as with anything, think about your budget. How much can you afford to spend per month on your broadband? And how much do you expect to use it, and for what purpose?

If you intend to use the internet for downloading or viewing a lot of sites, you’ll need to take into account any usage limits. Some providers like the Post Office offer a low monthly cap of 5MB, which is enough for a light to medium user who doesn’t need to download much. For the media fans, a higher download cap will be needed, or even an unlimited one.

There has been a lot of controversy regarding certain providers and their appalling customer service, so if you’re not technologically minded, and anticipate needing help with your broadband connection, then ask friends and family to recommend a provider with a good reputation for customer service. If you already have internet access then look on review sites for feedback.

Don’t go just on price alone. Cheap broadband may not be as cheap as you think. Take into account any hidden costs, and read all the small print. For example, you may find a package which charges just

Jennifer Quirk asked:

Broadband is now the most common type of internet in households. It’s is now actually pretty hard to find somebody using a dial up modem for their connection. Most broadband providers also supply a wireless router either for free of for a very cheap price, and with most laptops having an integrated router inside them as standard, broadband just keeps getting easier and easier.

Wireless broadband sends signals from your router through your house and beyond. Most household routers have a dependency range of around 45 meters, so the signal can be easily picked up by surrounding households if it is not protected.

If somebody is able to access your broadband connection you risk several things. There is of course the risk that by connecting to the network they can access your files and place viruses on your PC and therefore damage your machine. This is a practice that is on the rise in the united kingdom, with many people getting a kick out of being able to crack peoples passwords just for fun.

However, they can also affect you negatively in less malicious, but still harmful ways.

For example, if somebody logs onto your network and begins to download a large video file, they will slow down your internet’s speed and performance by a huge amount. The longer they can get away with this, the worse off you are. Many broadband companies have a “bandwidth” or “download limit”, and if somebody else is using it up for their own means, you lose out entirely.

Apart from direct attacks on your machine, there is also the risk of them looking at your history and possibly getting hold of your passwords and usernames meaning they could access highly personal information. Never store your banking details, credit card numbers or contact information on your PC.

If they take part in illegal activity such as phishing schemes, downloading music and movies illegally, or worse dealing in highly illegal products such as drugs and pornography, using your internet is a perfect way for them to shift the blame, as all of the connections are under your name. It is also very hard to prove who has accessed your network if you are in a densely populated area.

So for these reasons it is really very important that you limit who can access your broadband. It is usually a simple process to protect yourself, and nowadays broadband providers often supply you with the correct tools and software.

Make sure you have a good look at what you have been supplied with and use it to the best benefit that you can.

Andy Adams asked:

In the last part of this guide I told you how to determine the speed of your broadband connection using online broadband speed tests to see if you’re getting your money’s worth, I also covered how to decide what speed of broadband you realistically need without spending needless extra amounts on bandwidth you aren’t going to use.

Well now we move on to the usage section of this guide, due to the vast nature of the Internet it can be used in millions of different ways from talking to a family member halfway round the world to looking up the recipe for that cheesecake you enjoyed as a kid. Depending on how you use the Internet can determine whether you can get cheaper broadband or not.

Are limits any good?

Internet Service Suppliers provide Broadband to millions of people in this country, and each one has thousands in any one town or city. Providing a service to these customers is exactly like providing running water, in order to ensure everyone gets their fair share then sometimes limits have to be put in place, with internet suppliers you may be able to get a cheaper deal by agreeing that you will only use a certain amount per month.

This is normally measured in Gigabytes and is recommended for people who don’t use the Internet that much, people who have opted for this service have found that their service is much quicker than the same speed group for people who are on unlimited download services. Obviously if you go over your limit then it is charged in a similar way to a mobile phone contract.

Unlimited on the other hand allows you to download to your heart’s content with no fear of extra charges for being an Internet-fiend for one month. Unlimited plans have come under scrutiny in recent years in that they are not necessarily “unlimited” per say, in order to maintain the same quality of service to all their customers in your area your broadband supplier may have a fair-use policy, as if you are downloading movies and large files all the time then it will have an effect on other people’s service. In these cases repeated offenders are normally sent a letter saying that they should lower their usage as it isn’t fair to others, if the behaviour continues then it has been known for suppliers to indiscriminately lower the user’s speed but not reduce the cost.

So for cases where you know you are not going to be downloading large files (typically less than 5gb/month) then you may like to consider looking into applying limits on your connection, it could be the key you need to cheap broadband!

Packages: Sweetening the deal

The lines between the Internet and traditional media such as Television and Radio have been blurred quite a bit in the past few years, with sites like Youtube and the BBC’s iPlayer these days many people are looking to the World Wide Web for their fix of entertainment.

The Cable and Satellite companies have recognized this fact and have rolled with the punches, most media companies now offer cheaper rates on bundled packages, normally consisting of Broadband, TV and landline phones, Virgin Media include packages that include mobile telephones too since they have their own mobile network.

Big savings can be made if you are willing to change all your needs to one supplier, typically if you get all three from the list above then you can pay as little as
