Adair Cameron asked:

Wireless broadband is fast becoming the most popular way to connect to the internet. With most broadband providers now offering packages that include a free wireless router or one at discounted price, and most laptops now come with an integrated wireless receiver. This makes the ideal opportunity to take advantage of wireless broadband.

Wireless broadband works by your router sending a signal throughout your house and beyond; it doesn’t just stop at where your laptop is. With an indoor range of around 30-45 metres, this signal may be picked up by your neighbour too, allowing them to benefit from your broadband.

Someone else using your wireless broadband can be extremely dangerous in a sense that not only can that person access your broadband, that person can also;

•	Slow down your internet performance

•	View files on your computer and spread dangerous viruses

•	Look at the websites you visit, read your emails and copy your usernames and passwords

•	Send spam or perform illegal activities with your broadband connection

To prevent this only takes a few minutes, you can protect your wireless broadband connection the same way that banks protect your password when you log onto their websites. This method is called encryption; this is scrambled data on your wireless broadband network that only computers with an encryption key can read your communications.

To protect your wireless broadband network; follow these steps:

1.	Login to the control panel of your router/wireless modem; details are usually found in the documentation supplied with your router/wireless modem.

2.	Make sure a 128bit WEP Key is on your router.

3.	Change the default username and password on your router immediately after you turn it on.

4.	Close all ports on your router (if any are open).

5.	Make sure the DMZ is inactive

6.	If you can turn ping responses off on your router, do so

7.	Change the SSID (router name) of your router to something you will recognise, but choose something that does not relate to you, your broadband provider or the manufacturer of the router.

To set up your PC/Laptop, follow these steps:

1.	Make sure that the SSID (router name) is not the same as your PC/Laptops name.

2.	Make sure your PC/Laptop has a secure password that contains numbers as well as letters. Make sure that it very difficult to guess your password

3.	Do not store any personal information on your PC/Laptop like bank details, bills, credit card numbers etc.

Additional advice is to change your WEP Key once a month to disable potential threats gaining access to your broadband. This WEP Key can be configured automatically.

So make sure your secured and not given others access to free broadband.

If you are interested in taking advantage of current broadband internet technology then you should compare many broadband providers available in your area.

Stephen Burford asked:

Best Internet Account. Order Broadband online and broadband comparisons. Stuck with where to order broadband online? Are there too many companies to compare and choose from? Wonder whether you should get a phone line and broadband line thrown in together? Do you wonder if you can get free broadband? I

t can be frustrating if you choose the wrong broadband provider due to bad customer service or hidden costs. Especially when you need to get online and the computer just says, “no, no I am not going online!” Don’t worry! We are here to help you choose the best Internet account for you. Broadband is everywhere. There are over 20 providers ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous. We have made good broadband comparisons for you.

The good news that with so many broadband providers it means that we have cheap broadband offers in plentiful supply. If you’re new to broadband then you’ll want the cheapest broadband Internet account and probably a wireless thrown in. If you already have broadband then you better check if you are tied into a contract. If you are and you break the contract you may be charged a fine for leaving that broadband provider.

When choosing the best Internet account you will want to look into the following things:

Speed – 8MBps (megabytes per second) is about as fast as you are going to get and you really don’t need any higher than this. If you are just doing web browsing and not downloading music or films then go for something a bit lower that 8MBs, you could probably get away with an Internet account that is only 1MBps.

How much are you going to use the Internet? – Most Internet accounts will have a download limit. The smallest will usually start at 1GB, going up to unlimited bandwidth. Data is only used up when you are surfing the net or downloading files. 1GB will mean you can view around 25,000 web pages. So, if it’s just you using the Internet account and nobody else then this is more than ideal. If there are more people in the house and if you download music or watch online videos then you’ll need a bit more. You can download rokairo rokario.com/ that will monitor your download limit if you are worried about going over it. Do you want it in a package with your telephone line? Some companies offer both but others will need a BT line to connect.

Fredrick Joy asked:

Mobile broadband dongles are used for accessing internet while on the go. They are small devices which look very much like USB drives. In fact, they are a combination of a USB drive and circuitry for mobile internet access. They can be plugged into the USB port of laptops and PCs, for browsing the web, emailing, watching online videos, and doing everything else that you would on the internet. If you travel frequently and wish to carry your whole internet world with you on your journey, then mobile broadband is for you. Here are a few tips that you could bear in mind when you buy a dongle.

Find out what exactly your requirements are. When you travel, what is it that you really need the internet for? Are you a light user, who just checks emails and may be surfs the web? Or do you need mobile broadband for official work, where you might have to download huge attachments? Or are you a hard-core gamer or entertainment enthusiast who loves to get hold of the HD videos and other data intensive applications from the web, when travelling? There are plenty of mobile broadband providers who offer a variety of plans for mobile internet. So depending upon your needs, you can opt for a plan which suits you best. Light users can go for a plan which involves low download limits with low tariffs. While the heavy users can choose a plan which might have a flat rate fee with unlimited data downloading.

Also be aware that when mobile network operators mention unlimited data downloads, there might actually be a cut-off. The user’s downloads will usually be way below this limit. However, if the user actually exceeds this limit, the provider might request the user to reduce the downloading.

The network fidelity is another important criteria to consider. If you are aware of which places you’d be visiting when accessing mobile broadband, then it is better you have a good knowledge about the network coverage of the provider in those places. Most providers present a coverage checker tool on their website. This is essential because there might be regions which lie in a black-spot, where the signal strength is not strong enough. Hence you might lose connectivity or get very slow internet access in these areas. Choosing a broadband supplier who has a good coverage in the regions that you’ll be visiting, is thus important.

Some mobile network operators give you a buffer period, to try out their mobile broadband package. If you are not happy with the performance of the network, you can terminate your contract with the carrier without incurring much expenses. However, if you sign up a contract for a lengthy period, and in case you wish to terminate it in between, you might have to pay up for the reminder period of the contract. Hence be wise and careful when opting for a contract broadband. Find out all terms and conditions before signing up. Pay as you go can work out very cost effective in many cases.

When buying a mobile dongle, you can even get a dongle insurance. In case your mobile broadband USB modem gets lost or stolen, the insurance will cover you up, financially. The retailers usually ask you to sign up for an insurance at the time of purchase.

In order to protect your laptop or PC from viruses, it is best to set your system security and firewalls to forbid unauthorised access. Your PC or laptop retailer will be able to help you with getting the optimum anti-virus software.

Shirley Stevens asked:

If you thought that mobile broadband was something to do with surfing the web on your mobile phone, you’re very wrong. Mobile broadband allows you to have immediate web access on either your computer or laptop from wherever you are, be it at home, at the airport, on the train or halfway across the Pennine Way. Instead of the cables or wires needed for standard broadband, mobile broadband is powered by the 3G mobile network, hence the name. Simply, all you need is a subscription to a mobile service network and a plug-in USB modem – a dongle, if you prefer – and you’re away. It’s not purely by chance that the present UK mobile broadband providers are also the main mobile phone providers such as Vodafone mobile broadband, T-mobile, O2, 3 mobile broadband and Orange mobile broadband.

Is it suitable for everyone? Bear in mind though that this exciting concept is not freely available to everyone just yet, so don’t rush to cancel your current telephone or cable internet provider until you have had a closer look at it. A mobile broadband network will only work well if the mobile telephone network it runs on is efficient. For instance, disparities in speed are the norm and erratic reception, the curse of mobile phones, will also plague mobile internet connections in exactly the same way. If you use the internet a lot, mobile broadband is unlikely to be suitable for you as it would not be able to compete with the unlimited usage allowances of most hardwired broadband packages. However, if all you need is to check your email and surf sporadically, then you will find it an attractive proposition – especially if you are on the move a lot. Depending on your specific service provider, the new mobile broadband networks offer speeds ranging from 2.8Mb to as much as 7.2Mb. However, usage limits are restrictively applied throughout.

How much can you download? Current mobile broadband providers are offering download limits of between 1 – 15Gb per month, which means it would not suit anyone who has to regularly transfer large files. Equally, if you spend hours on YouTube, or listening to internet radio, or can’t resist online pirated movies, mobile broadband is unlikely to suit you – unless money is no object. For that reason, mobile broadband is unlikely to replace ADSL or cable any time soon. But, on the other hand, the mobile broadband facility is perfect for anyone who is away from home a great deal and needs frequent and ready access to their email while on the go. It would be absolutely brilliant for occasional users who have more than one home but don’t want to pay for two broadband connections. It has also become increasingly popular among students living in student houses where nobody wants to pay for a landline.

What does it cost? Mobile broadband set-up and monthly costs differ considerably from network to network. The usage allowance affects the price, but in general, the longer the contract the less it costs. You will probably find it very helpful to consult a broadband comparison site and compare all mobile broadband deals and current prices.

Watch out… As mobile broadband technology is still in the early stages of development and very likely to drop substantially in price in the future, it is advisable, say the experts, that consumers avoid extended contract periods. On the other hand, if money is no object and you are happy to pay for the many advantages of a permanently connected laptop and welcome an escape from all the wires and cables necessary for standard broadband, then go for it!

Matthew Christian asked:

Well, the process has also engulfed the other sectors as well. This includes broadband as well. As a result, the top leading mobile broadband providers are coming with lucrative deals. After successfully replacing the dial-up connections, they have been in the limelight for combating the slow connectivity. These providers always come up with lucrative plans, which allure more and more mobile lovers around the world. Now, this is what makes it easy for the mobile lovers to strike the best deal. However, there are few leading providers such as Vodafone, Orange, O2, 3 mobile, Virgin and T-mobile, which are offering exclusive mobile phone deals with lucrative mobile broadband offers.
Paul Callis asked:

The UK market for broadband is highly competitive with countless providers and an equal number of products making it very difficult to choose a broadband provider. What adds to confusion is the presence of localized service providers also vying for the broadband market pie alongside nationwide operators.

On an average, the top broadband providers package their services targeting specific needs of individual customers such as low downtimes, fast and reliable service etc. But there are critical issues you need to evaluate when switching providers, regardless of reasons.

The first thing you are going to mind is the downtime providers require to transfer and setup the service, which is important if your profession needs call for quicker switchover. When you are migrating from cable broadband to ADSL service, wherein things like new modem, micro filter, Ethernet connection take over a couple of days to install. Remember, very few providers make provisions to use your cable broadband parallel to ADSL without having to loose your work time while they set it up.

Mind you, all this will be possible only if you have a basic landline phone connection or a BT phone. Plan this ahead of switching your broadband provider if you’re concerned about delays. Getting a BT basic phone and ADSL broadband connections will take around 10 days if you apply simultaneously. On the other hand, switching back to cable broadband provider takes around a week’s time and you must have your license/connection canceled from your ADSL broadband provider. The only matter you need to check is that your computer matches required specifications.

How to Judge Broadband Providers: The thumb rule to judge broadband providers ahead of switching services is to compare their products, reliability and commitment to customer service. It may appear simple than meets the eye but judging reliability and customer care requires quite an amount of research whereas comparing different products is easier.

How to Compare Broadband Products: Here again, the thumb rule is to go by cost comparison which includes setup fees, usage charges, rentals, if any, downloading speeds (ranges from 1-8 mbps) and whether there is free night usages. Some providers package their products thrown in with 1-2 months free rentals and freebies like free emails, antivirus and anti spam etc, just to make them more attractive. The package namely BroadCall from the Utility Warehouse Discount Club is one to consider due to the pricing, package on offer and consistent glowing third party customer reviews.

Don’t forget to check with neighbors when switching your broadband providers especially when you are in a new city.

Andrew J Peterson asked:

Internet connection can be taken for home as well as office purposes. Now-a-days, some of the latest technology mobile phones are also preloaded with high-performance Internet browser. The conventional or traditional dial up Internet connection has some inconveniences. To avoid these problems, now, most of the UK’s network providers offer broadband services to their customers. The broadband is nothing but an advanced method Internet connection. It allows the users to access the Internet without dial-up the phone every time, as it always stays on.

To provide broadband services in UK, number of providers are entering into the market. But, only some of them are recognised as the reliable and trusted ones as they offer best services to their customers.
