Caroline Telford asked:

Is this your first time to look for a broadband Internet Service Provider or ISP or do you already have an existing provider but you are planning to switch?

No matter which of these two categories you belong to, it is best to do your homework first so that you would know the options which are available for you.

Why You Should Look for a Broadband Provider

Fortunately for today’s subscribers, there is another option aside from the traditional dial-up Internet connection. When you use a dial-up modem, there are a lot of problems that you may encounter – not to mention the fact that this type of connection does not offer much in terms of speed and browsing experience.

The opposite of this is true if you will go for a broadband connection. With this, you can stay connected to the Internet on a 24-hour basis. Also, the speed of broadband Internet is about 10 times faster than dial-up services.

As such, broadband Internet connection is seen as a more preferable option. Today, there are a good number of broadband connection types that you can choose from.

The Types of Broadband Connection Options that You Have

For you to have a better idea about the types of broadband Internet connections which are available in the market today, here is a brief definition of the terms:

1. ADSL or Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line

This type of broadband connection utilizes the existing telephone line that you have. To connect to the Internet without interfering with your use of the landline phone, a router or a special modem is used.

2. Cable Broadband

This type of broadband connection also utilizes a special modem which is connected with your cable box if you have one. Check with your cable TV provider if they also offer cable broadband services.

3. Satellite Broadband

Here, you can use either the one-way or two-way satellite connection. The downside to this type of broadband is that it is quite expensive to install and maintain.

4. Wireless Broadband

Wireless broadband is suitable for areas in the UK where ADSL and cable broadband are not available. Here, an antenna will be installed outside of your house which receives the signal which passes through your computer. No phone lines are needed for wireless broadband connections.

A Final Word about Comparing Options for Your Broadband Connection

Remember that once you decide to go for a broadband Internet connection – it does not necessarily mean that all options are available in your area. For example, if your house is located in a rural area, ADSL or cable may not be available – so wireless broadband or satellite are your only two options.

After determining which broadband connection options are applicable for you, the next thing that you need to do is make a comparison of the broadband deals. Naturally, you should select the provider which will offer you the best broadband service while giving you the best value for your money.

Frank Owen asked:

DSL And High Speed Internet

There are many ways you can access High Speed Internet using the Web. One way to do this is through a cable modem. Another way to do this is via a digital subscriber line, otherwise known as a DSL connection. A DSL connection is one of the fastest ways to connect to the Internet, and uses the same technology your phone does to connect to the Web (only it’s a lot faster).

Of course not everyone can take advantage of DSL technology. Service is sometimes limited to specific locations so you’ll have to see if DSL is available in your area prior to taking advantage of a DSL connection.

How DSL Works

How does DSL work? It carries digital rather than analog data (analog data is carried by phone lines) over a telephone line without interference. Most DSL providers provide asymmetrical DSL service. This means that the available frequencies that data can be transmitted across in a line are divided so that most of the time the end user will have access to much faster connections when downloading and uploading information.

There are of course other forms of DSL services including VDSL, which works over short distances, SDSL, which won’t allow you to use your phone at the same time but is often faster for sending information and RADSL where the modem automatically adjusts the speed of your connection based on the quality and length of the line it is using to connect with.
